Plated Hoisin Baked Tofu

Have you always loved hoisin-baked tofu or tofu in general?

Me and my husband never really grew up eating tofu.

It wasn’t until we decided to start including more vegetarian and vegan recipes that I started experimenting with the different textures and flavors tofu has to offer.

My favorite kind of tofu has always been crispy baked tofu, usually found in the Pad Thai from a local dive.

But why buy takeout when you can have a delicious homemade version?

Once your hoisin-baked tofu is ready, you get to enjoy it however you like.

Pile it on a nice bowl of rice with kimchi and scallions or in a delicious Buddha bowl; the skies the limit.

Heck, sometimes I enjoy a small bowl straight out of the oven like it’s a bowl of popcorn!

Ingredients For Hoisin Baked Tofu

  • Extra-firm tofu (I use Fontaine Santé that I get from Costco)
  • Low-sodium soy sauce
  • Hoisin sauce (Whole Foods sells a Vegan Hoisin Sauce)
  • Cornstarch
  • Olive oil (avocado oil can also be used)
  • Sesame oil
  • Brown sugar – (optional) If you’d like some extra stickiness, it adds a nice caramelization
  • Roasted sesame seeds (optional)

Easy Tofu Recipe Instructions

  1. Get an extra firm block of tofu. Pat dry using a paper towel or clean cloth.
  2. Wrap your tofu in fresh paper towels or cloth and sit it under something heavy to press the extra water out for 30 minutes (I use my metal paper towel holder).
  3. Cut the tofu into small squares.
  4. Toss into a bowl with 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. Once fully coated, transfer into a sieve to remove any excess cornstarch.
  5. Place on a lined baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil (or avocado oil) and soy sauce.
  6. Mix by hand to get everything nicely coated. Distribute your tofu squares on the baking sheet.
  7. Bake in the oven at 200°C/400°F for 20-25 minutes depending on how crispy you want the tofu. Mix/Shake halfway.
  8. Place your cooked tofu into a bowl and toss with the hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and sesame seeds.

Note: If you want to add some stickiness to your hoisin baked tofu, then you can dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of brown sugar in about one tablespoon of hot water and add that to your soy sauce when coating your tofu.

Just make sure you properly separate your tofu squares on the baking tray as the melting sugar will cause them to stick together.
