Puff Pastry Tarts

If you are afraid of baking, don’t fret, these puff pastry tarts are beginner-friendly and beyond easy to prepare.

No one needs to know how quickly you were able to prep and bake these pastry puffs; that can be your little secret!

Ingredients For Puff Pastry Tarts

All you need are 3 simple ingredients to make these savory tomato puff pastry tarts, perfect for your weekend brunch.

  • Store-bought puff pastry (sheets make it even easier)
  • Pesto
  • Cherry tomatoes (sliced tomatoes will work too).
  • 1 lightly beaten egg white (Vegan alternative: coconut oil or plant-based milk) -All optional

How To Make Puff Pastry Tarts

  1. Preheat your oven to the temperature of your pastry puff’s requirements. Mine was 400°F on Bake.
  2. Lay your puff pastry sheet flat and cut it into 4 equal pieces. If you are using a puff pastry block of dough, allow it to thaw as indicated on the package and then roll it out to its specification. Mine allowed for a 12-inch square.
  3. Pierce the center of each square with your fork in multiple spots.
  4. Put roughly one tablespoon of pesto in the center and spread it out in the center area
  5. Place your cherry tomatoes on top of the pesto
  6. Fold the edges to make roughly a 1 cm edge. You can press gently down if the edges are not staying folded.
  7. Brush your beaten egg whites onto the crust (optional step but will give a nice touch)
  8. Bake as directed on your pastry package. If using the Tenderflake brand, it’s 15-20 minutes until golden.

Puff Pastry Tart Alternative Fillings

Puff pastry tarts are extremely versatile. I’m using cherry tomatoes today because I love tomatoes, they go very well with pesto, and I have plenty to use up from my garden.

But feel free to experiment with cheeses such as brie, vegetables, and even delectable dessert versions.

As we move into the upcoming holiday season, a delicious brie, caramelized onion, pecan, and maple drizzle version is calling to me.

Extra Spread Options

  • Hummus (a countless variety of flavors exist)
  • Olive Tapenades
  • Other pesto types (Here are 50 different recipes  if you want to make a homemade version)
  • Cream cheese (chive and onion is my favorite flavor)
  • Honey, Chocolate spread, Jam/Preserves for sweet versions

Toppings

  • Cheeses (brie,  mozzarella, cheddar, feta, among others)
  • Caramelized onions
  • Spinach
  • Olives
  • Prosciutto
  • Fresh basil
  • Nuts (almond slices, pecan pieces)
  • Berries, apples, peaches, chocolate chips
